The learning from theatre

Managerial Learning from Theatre

“All the best performers bring to their role something more, something different than what the author put on paper. That’s what makes theatre live. That’s why it persists.”-Stephen Sondheim

1. Modelling of an Idea “Individualism”

So in my theatre, the single word of theme which was given to me is “INDIVIDUALISM”. The word Individualism indicates the belief that the needs of each person are more important than the needs of the whole society or group.

So in terms of the modelling of an idea, by taking the word “Individualism”, I tried to use it in terms of the “Individualism vs. Collectivism”. So while modelling the idea I emphasis to develop my theatre theme which shows that every person loves to talk about helping the society but when it comes to action they becomes selfish and always tries to put their selfish interest first and then other things.

So in short my theme of play loves to talk about collectivism but when it comes in to action suddenly it turns into individualism.

I found that theatre helps them develop the confidence that’s essential to speaking clearly, lucidly, and thoughtfully. Theatre has a great hand on enhancing the oral communication skills and we can find our voice through the play by acting onstage teaches you how to be comfortable speaking in front of large audiences, and some of your theatre classes will give you additional experience talking to groups.  Furthermore, your work on crews has taught you that clear, precise, and well-organized oral communications are best.

Now I have idea in my hand of individualism but the communication of this idea to my team members is necessary part of any successful theatre. So here concept of shared vision and shared value is introduced.

So for the development of shared value and shared vision, I asked my every team member and did brainstorming that what idea or incidences came into their mind when they think about the individualism and how influencing idea it is. So every team member came up with different ideas and incidences which actually reflect the theme of individualism and then we started filtering the idea and focusing on most influencing and appealing idea or incident of individualism which strikes the most. So by mutual consent we came up to some set of ideas on individualism and whole theatre team agreed on it to work out and that is how I developed my shared vision and shared value.

2. Envisioning the play:

In terms of the envisioning the play I know that “The first step toward creating an improved future is developing the ability to envision it.”  So envisioning the end is enough to put the means in motion. I also envisioned my play from head to tail and by deciding the flow and sequence of actions which can best speak about the individualism.  We decided to effects of individualism present in the society. So in my action plan, we decided the set of sequence of showing different social issues which is contributed by individualism. We decided our sequence of incidences in such a way that after every incidence the degree of emotions and degree of influence in audience will trigger and it involves audience more into it.

Yes!! Because of the good envisioning the play, our final performance also matched with that vision that we had at a pre- production stage. But if I am to rate our final performance against the pre-production planning, I will rate it 4.5/5.

3. Sharing of idea and vision and possible resistance to it

In terms of sharing idea with the team member, I played a role of listener than a speaker. I never tried to impose only those idea or incidences which are coming across my mind. I motivated and encouraged my whole team to come up with different ideas of individualism. I listened and welcomed each and every thought from my team member and analyse the possibility and relevancy of each idea from my team member and by analysing the effectiveness and ineffectiveness of each idea, we finally selected some incidences which reflects the feeling of individualism in the society.

By this way I share my ideas with team and thought about big possibility of doing stage in two hours.

Selection of an idea and convincing the team member for that particular idea was the resistance I faced. Although I welcomed each and everyone’s idea of individualism, but when it comes to selection, we need to give logical rational for choosing a one option compare to others. Sometimes it’s hard to convince people to leave their own idea and work on other person idea. I also faced this situation in my team.

4. Design and production

The process of design and production of our play was more and dynamic. As we know that before designing the action plans and production we must be aware about each team member unique competency and capability. As we can’t assign a role of emotions to the person who looks funny or vice versa or we can’t assign a role of strongly person to the person who looks like low in motivation or lazy. So in our design and production of the play, we decide our characters and give them role by knowing and focusing on their unique ability and capacity. So they can come up with their best performance by their heart. Yes!! In this phase of designing and production, we learnt a lot from the earlier mistakes. Previously we assigned the role without looking the personal unique ability of any team member, but after sometime we understand the value of it and assigned role of character based on the team member’s ability and strength. So there are lot of learning from the earlier mistakes.

5.Enabling others to act

I enable others to act by telling them to lead by examples and telling them inspiration story. I used a way of story-telling to communicate my idea properly and enable them to act on the shared vision.

I also celebrated completion of the performance before performance by sitting together on the lunch table as a whole team and interact the word of motivation and inspiration for the future success. By exchanging the words of motivation and inspiration after rehearsal and before performance psychologically helps my team member to perform best on the stage. I found because of this motivation interaction, my team was full of confidence and had already developed a guts to present best on the stage.

6.Leadership Lessons from the Play

Yes!! I learned many leadership lessons from this play.

By play I learn leadership which improve helps us in leading ourselves. As we learn leading ourselves better we are also able to inspire others to do the same. This contributes to the eco system and helps an organisation to create culture of growth by leading self.

I also learned to lead any project from the start to finish, in which we have to create a concept from scratch, and then refine it so that it can articulate into the compelling vision and then we have to select best person to perform a specific role among team and have to manage everyone on the basis of available time and budget.

One of the most valuable things acting taught me is self-awareness. In theatre you have to be conscious of everything that is going on around you. You must listen to the other actors in order to respond appropriately, especially when someone “misses” a line or a movement, which can happen even with fine, experienced actors. And, you have to be constantly aware of the physical space you are moving through.

I also learned to how to manage a dynamic team in an effective way. I learned how to manage a collaborative manner of the team to achieve an effective experience by managing the whole team in such a way for common goal without hurting an individual sentiment of the team members.

I also learned how to envision and implement big picture thinking into actions. By envisioning the big picture and by effectively communicating our shared vision and shared value to team member, I learned to convert envisioned big picture into reality by this theatre activity.

It’s a wonderful Life

Wondefrful-Life-posterIn the movie “It’s wonderful life”, an angel from the heaven helps and convince a compassionate but despairingly frustrated young blood businessman by showing life would have been like if he never existed.

So in this movie, we can found an intervention which is divine by an guardian angel to help a young businessman in distress.

This Movie is also supporting the quote of “It’s difficult to be good”. We can find that P097361313849George is a good man who sacrificed his dream and his youth on behalf of the citizens of his small town. By showing the attributes of the good obedient son,he also inherited his father loan’s business and give up his dream of travelling the world.George also didn’t accept the proposal of selfish banker Mr. Potter and decided to not sell his business to protect the poor community and also offers a mean to the town people to afford to buy their own house. So in the movie, George showcased as a good man. But when his uncle looses US $ 8,000.00 which are stolen by Mr. Potter, George finds himself in very difficult situation and decided to commit suicide, as he believed he worth more dead than alive. So we can say that “it’s difficult to be good”. Captain Phillips

CAPTAIN PHILLIPS
The movie “captain Phillips” is based on the true story of hijacking the cargo ships named as  Maersk Albama by the four Somali Pirates. It is basically a story of the two leader named as Captain Phillios and Abduwali Muse. This movie shows their interplay, and it exposes the differences and similarities between their leadership style.

Different leadership styles-

The basic similarity is that both the leaders are protagonist in their own minds.

cp1

Captain phillips shows himself as a responsible, selfless, servant leader, so when he heard about the attacking from pirates, he puts himself in danger in order to save his crew.

On the other hand, muse shown the autocratic leadership style, he sounded selfish, cruel, and fully determined in completing his aims without looking the consequences. Towards the end of the movie, we found Muse irresponsible behaviour towards the life of his crew.

But if we talk about the leadership style, both the leader shown the “Risk Taking” behaviour.Captain Phillips refused to go back when heard about the multiple waring related to pirates attack in the route. on the other hand Muse also reflected the risk taking ability by targeting the ship “Maersk Alabama” which had a big threat of military intervention. Other similarity between them is that both men are driven by their bosses; both are simple businessman. Muse Repetedly assured his American Hostages”no Al-Qaida here. Just business”. so in other words, both the leader has job to do and crew to manage.

Captain Phillips shown the selfless behaviour by telling the pirates to kill him instead of captain-phillips-03crew and he was also volunteering to be taken as a hostage in exchange to his ship. On the other hand, Muse shown the opposite behaviour, so when he caught by the U.S. Navy, he told his crew to free him whatever they have to do in exchange.

If we talk about the leaders  duty to empower the followers, Phillips empowered his crew to take any action in absence of him, but muse followed the autocratic leadership style and did not empower the followers to take the decision. So in case of Phillips, when he was taken hostage, onebarkhad-abdi-captain-phillips of the crew member, Shane took the lead of the crew. But in case of Muse, when he left to board the US Navy ship, his followers were confused  to take decisions and lead the others.

Phillips stood strong in terms of the strategic and planning approach. Phillips aware about  the drill and back up plan in case of pirates attacks. But Muse didn’t have any back up plan and strategic move in case of emergency, Move was having very cool attitude by assuming that things will be easy, he will hijack the ship and then he would take ransom and nobody will get hurt, so he didn’t have any backup plans.

Learning :

  • You don’t only have to be friends with your crew, but you have to earn their trust
  • Your job as a leader is to anticipate
  • The leader’s behaviour influence how others act
  • Stay strong

Along with the learning, I liked the various quotes in the movie which we can also take as a learnings-

  • “I know this is our life but the world is moving so fast.”
  • Advanced Training
  • Leaders Make Hard, Unpopular Decisions
  • 4 Committed Men Can Make A Significant Impact
  • “The problem isn’t me talking.  It’s you not listening.
  • “I’ve come too far.  I can’t give up.”
  • “We all got bosses.”

So they train but Mandela decides to show them what they are playing for by making them teach rugby in small townships and spend some time in the prison where he was held for 27 years.

A leader can make change real and yet live his values throughout his life-

Every Leader has a vision and value in his heart and soul. Leader has the power to change and with this power he changes and influences people’s life towards the brighter side.

By focussing on power to change,  leader also has a value system associated with every aspect of actions. Apollo 13

appollo_blog_7571

Plot:
It had been less than a year since man first walked on the Moon, but as far as the American public was concerned, Apollo 13 was just another “routine” space flight–until these words pierced the immense void of space: “Houston, we have a problem.” Stranded 205,000 miles from Earth in a crippled spacecraft, astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert fight a desperate battle to survive. Meanwhile, at Mission Control, astronaut Ken Mattingly, flight director Gene Kranz and a heroic ground crew race against time–and the odds–to bring them home.

  •  He encouraged others to keep on working,
  •  Used many methods of motivation to find  solution.
  •  Other people he worked with also seemed to enjoy their work.

  • While communicating his plan to other astronauts in space, he realizes that after seven days in space, the lack of sleep and increased stress levels have made the astronauts unable, unwilling and not confident to carry out the task.
  • He said, “I’ll walk you through it.”  This telling leadership style could have been one of the major instances that allowed the team to return home safely.
  • Ken knew that his team was capable and mature; however, their physical and mental state needed fresh leadership in order to not make a fatal mistake.

Wildland Leadership Values and Principles

Duty

As Kranz holds a meeting with the flight controllers and engineers to develop the initial plan of getting the crew home—around the moon. we can also develop a plan to accomplish given  desired objectives.
As Lovell gives Swigert the task of docking the command module to the lunar module even though all astronauts have the ability to dock. We can also consider individual skill levels and development needs when assigning tasks.
As Kranz maintains order when the problem occurs.  Tells his subordinates to “work the problem.”  we can also be proficient in our job, both technically and as a leader.)
As Lovell gives the pilot seat to Swigert for reentry after occupying the seat by habit. We can also Delegate those tasks that we  are not required to do personally.
As Engineers determine that the weight distribution of the ship is incorrect since they expected moon rocks to be part of the returning cargo. The crew must quickly redistribute cargo.  We should make sound and timely decisions.

 Respect:

As the flight physician voices his medical opinion on two instances—grounding Mattingly and telling Kranz the astronauts need sleep.  we should also observe human behavior as well as fire behavior.  Consider team experience, fatigue and physical limitations when accepting assignments.
As Kranz conducts many briefings with flight controllers throughout the film. We can also provide accurate and timely briefings.
As Engineers develop a carbon dioxide filter. We can also take care of our subordinate’s needs.
As Kranz listens to the plans developed by his subordinates. We can also employ our subordinates in accordance with their capabilities.
As Jack Swigert places a “NO” note on the limb jettison switch as not to jettison with the crew is in the Aquarius.  We can also put the safety of our subordinates above all other objectives.

Integrity

As Lovell chooses to scrub Mattingly from the mission. We can also choose the difficult right over the easy wrong.
As Lovell asks Mission Control to double-check his computations. We can also ask questions of peers and superiors.
As during the blind burn, Lovell makes an error and apologizes to Haise and Swigert. We can also accept full responsibility for and correct poor team performance.
As Jack Swigert admits that he cannot read his own writing for the reentry plan.  Mattingly tells him he will walk him through it. We can also know the strengths/weaknesses in your character and skill level.
As upon reentry, Lovell tells Mission Control and the crew, “Gentlemen, It’s been a privilege flying with you.” We should also credit subordinates for good performance.)

The Longest Yard

There are enough football sequences at the tail end of this film for you to get your football fix and then some. This movie also gives new meaning to the term “unnecessary roughness” as both inmates and guards inflict as much bodily harm on one another as they legally and illegally can. The results are many broken noses, broken necks, broken bones.

It’s incredibly fun seeing these guys use football as an excuse to try and kill each other. The final football sequence is a beauty and the way it’s played out and directed makes it one of the coolest moments of the entire movie.

Leadership Movie Quotes:

  • Paul Crewe: “Nate, if you’re thinking about winning this game, then you’re as crazy as he is.”
Nate Scarboro: “Well, maybe so. But you spend fourteen years in this tank, you begin to understand that you’ve only got two thing left they can’t sweat out of you or beat out of you. And you better hang onto them, because they’re about the only thing you’re gonna have when you get out of here.”

  • Captain Knauer: “Dammit, Warden, I think this game’s a big mistake.”Warden Hazen: “Captain, not only will you have the chance to hone our team to a fine edge, you’ll also have the opportunity to learn a great deal about life. Why is it, do you suppose, that I can walk through this yard, surrounded by hate, and in total command?”

Captain Knauer: “Because you’ve got 15 gun turrets all around you that say you                         can.”

  • Paul Crewe: You know, there’s only one thing I’m sorry about.

Warden Hazen: What’s that, Mr. Crewe?

Paul Crewe:That you’re not out here with us knockin’ heads.

Warden Hazen: I’m afraid I’m a little old for that.

Paul Crewe: No, you never had the guts to begin with!
